ULEZ Checker UK, Clean Air Zone, LEZ & ZEZ

Car Facts UK Clean Air Zone,ULEZ, LEZ & ZEZ Checker

Check your vehicle against UK Clean Air Zone, ULEZ, LEZ and Oxford ZEZ rules using available DVLA vehicle emissions data.

Before you check

Enter a UK registration first, then select a city or scheme. Car Facts UK automatically identifies the physical vehicle type from available official vehicle data and checks the available emissions evidence against the selected scheme. Always confirm the result with the relevant official service before travelling or paying.

How the checker works

How Car Facts UK calculates a Clean Air result

The result is calculated from the vehicle information available for the registration, the physical vehicle type and the published rule structure for the selected zone. Where the available evidence is not strong enough for a safe automatic indication, the checker returns CHECK REQUIRED rather than inventing missing vehicle data.

01

Read available vehicle data

The lookup uses available vehicle evidence such as fuel type, Euro status where supplied, registration-date evidence, type approval, wheelplan and revenue weight.

02

Apply the selected zone rule

The checker combines that evidence with the automatically identified physical vehicle type and the rule set held for the chosen ULEZ, LEZ, CAZ or ZEZ scheme.

03

Return the safest supported outcome

The engine can return compliant, not compliant, charge applies, not charged, information only or check required. Unresolved evidence is not silently converted into a pass or fail.

Current checker coverage

UK clean-air schemes covered by this checker

This checker currently covers the UK schemes shown below. The list is generated from the same scheme data used by the calculator, helping keep the information shown here aligned with the checks available above.

England

Clean Air Zones

Bath, Birmingham, Bradford, Bristol, Portsmouth, Sheffield, Tyneside / Newcastle and Gateshead.

London ULEZ, London LEZ and Oxford ZEZ are also represented separately because they are not the central GOV.UK English CAZ service.

England information

Non-charging Clean Air Zone status

Greater Manchester · Liverpool

These informational entries do not apply Euro thresholds or calculate a daily Clean Air Zone charge.

Scotland

Low Emission Zones

Aberdeen LEZ, Dundee LEZ, Edinburgh LEZ, Glasgow LEZ.

Scottish LEZs are entry-restriction schemes. A non-compliant vehicle can be subject to enforcement rather than simply buying entry for the day.

UK status coverage

Wales & Northern Ireland

Wales — Clean Air Zone status · Northern Ireland — Clean Air Zone status

These are informational status entries rather than an attempt to invent an active city charging scheme where the catalogue does not contain one.

Emissions reference

Common minimum emissions standards at a glance

These are headline standards used across major UK clean-air schemes. The actual result still depends on the selected zone, vehicle class, exemptions, retrofit records and the evidence available for the individual registration.

English CAZ

GOV.UK minimum standards

Petrol cars and light vehicles: Euro 4

Diesel cars and light vehicles: Euro 6

Buses, coaches and HGVs: Euro VI

Motorcycles: Euro 3 where included by the local authority

Scottish LEZ

Common car & van standards

Petrol cars and vans: Euro 4

Diesel cars and vans: Euro 6

Other vehicle categories and exemptions should be confirmed through the official Scottish LEZ service.

London ULEZ

Light-vehicle standards

Petrol cars and vans: Euro 4

Diesel cars and vans: Euro 6

Motorcycles: Euro 3

London LEZ uses separate rules for affected heavier commercial and passenger vehicles.

What is the difference between ULEZ, CAZ, LEZ and ZEZ?

ULEZ is used for London's Ultra Low Emission Zone, CAZ is used for English city Clean Air Zones, LEZ is used for low-emission restriction schemes such as the Scottish city LEZs and London LEZ, and ZEZ means Zero Emission Zone, including Oxford's active pilot. Charging, restriction, exemption and vehicle-class rules vary by scheme.

What do Clean Air Zone classes A-D mean?

In England, the CAZ class determines which vehicle categories are normally in scope. Class A covers buses, coaches, taxis and private-hire vehicles; Class B adds HGVs; Class C adds vans and minibuses; Class D adds cars, with local authorities able to include motorcycles. The selected zone still controls the actual result.

Why might the result say check required?

A CHECK REQUIRED result means the available vehicle data or vehicle-class evidence is not strong enough for a safe automatic indication. Euro status may be absent, or a scheme may require weight, use or classification evidence that the lookup cannot establish confidently. Car Facts UK does not invent a Euro standard.

Why vehicle type matters

A private car, van, minibus, HGV, bus/coach or motorcycle can be treated differently depending on the zone. Car Facts UK identifies the physical vehicle type automatically from available official vehicle data; if it cannot do so safely, the result is CHECK REQUIRED rather than a guessed class. Taxi and private-hire licensing can still require separate official confirmation.

Why you should still check the official service

Local exemptions, permits, disabled tax classes, resident rules and scheme updates can affect charges. Car Facts UK provides an indication based on available vehicle data, not an official charge decision.
